MEET RICH

The following interview reveals some of Rich’s interests, work experiences, education, and advice for future architects.

Did you always know you wanted to be in the design and construction field?

I have been an artist from an early age. I enjoyed drawing and entering art competitions when I was young. In high school, while at Salesianum School, I took some drafting courses which made me interested in pursuing architecture. After graduation, I attended Drexel University, and then transferred to Temple University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Architecture Degree.

If you had to choose another profession, what would it be?

It would definitely be a creative profession like graphic design, product design, or automotive design.

What were some of your first job experiences?

I worked for five architectural firms prior to starting my first business doing architectural renderings, space planning, and building design. I gained invaluable experience working for other architects, but I always knew that I would ultimately want to work for myself.

What is your favorite part of managing your own firm?

I enjoy the freedom of making my own hours and having complete autonomy over the projects. I value being hands-on with our clients during the entire project process, from initial meeting through construction completion.

What advice would you give to an architecture student?

First, get a well-rounded education. In addition to studio, take business courses, structural design, and non-design electives. Also, do internships at architectural firms. It is crucial for architecture students to get real world office experience prior to graduating. Ask to be involved in all aspects of projects including client meetings, consultant coordination, and site visits. I worked at firms throughout my college years and it certainly helped me post-graduation.

What is your favorite school memory?

Despite the many late nights and at times harsh studio crits, my favorite college memory is architecture studio at Temple University. I enjoyed being creative with fellow classmates working on studio projects.

What do you love about architecture?

It’s very rewarding to witness your designs become reality and help homeowners realize their design dreams in the process. Architects are problem-solvers and I eagerly take on the challenges that each of our clients tasks us with.

What are some of your hobbies?

Being in nature is a welcome balance to working in the office. I’ve always enjoyed hiking, running, and anything outdoors with my family. In the past, I have also volunteered on archeological digs at Valley Forge Park and Paoli Battlefield. They were enriching experiences that reminded me that things created today will be the future’s past.

How do you deal with work-life balance?

I have had different design businesses the past 30 years, and it is easy to overwork since I love what I do. Having a supportive family allows me to look at life through a different lens and to remember the importance of a work-life balance. I am grateful for having my own business which allows me the flexibility and freedom to never miss a special event in my son’s life, be it field day, a recital, or a classroom presentation.
